Ciutat Vella is the old town: the Gothic Quarter, El Born, El Raval and Barceloneta. Everything is walkable, the beach is close and metro L1, L3 and L4 run through it.

Buildings are old, flats are often smaller and lifts are not a given. It is the busiest district for tourism and nightlife, so check the street and the floor carefully if you need quiet.
