What we look at

  1. The price against the usual rent for the same kind of home in that district, from listings we track every day.

  2. Warning signs in the text: money before a viewing, no viewing, odd payment methods, pressure, ID up front.

  3. What to ask before you go further: dates, bills, deposit, contract.

Five signs of a rental scam in Barcelona

These are the patterns the check looks for. One alone doesn't make a scam — several together usually do.

Money before a viewing

A deposit or “reservation fee” to hold a flat you haven't seen. Never pay before a viewing and a signed contract.

No viewing possible

The owner is abroad and will send the keys by post or courier. Real landlords and agencies show the home.

Odd payment methods

Western Union, crypto, gift cards or a transfer to a private account abroad. Pay by bank transfer to the contract holder.

Pressure to decide

“Many people are interested, pay today.” Urgency is how scams stop you checking.

ID or bank details up front

A copy of your passport and payslips before any viewing. Share documents only once you've seen the place.

Questions

Does it tell me if a listing is a scam?

No — it can't know for sure. It compares the price with the area and points out signs that often appear in scams, so you know what to check.

Where do the prices come from?

From the rental listings we track every day across agencies and platforms in Barcelona, grouped by district and by room or flat.

Do you keep what I paste?

No. The text or screenshot is read once to make the check and then discarded.
